About the Artist

"I create pastel and oil paintings with a variety of subject matter, but the focus is always on the large shapes created by dark and light patterns in the image versus the small details."

Artist's Statement

My goal as an artist is to isolate images which cause an emotional reaction for me and present them to the viewer in hopes that I can convey my feelings about the subject to them. I want others to see these wonderful things as I see them.

There are so many exciting things that go unnoticed - all of these are not necessarily what most people think of as beautiful. It may be the extraordinary way a commonplace or even ugly subject will appear when the light is hitting it in a certain way or all the feelings that a gray foggy day can evoke.

There are unlimited sources for this inspiration.

I try to find what is special about a subject and strengthen it - point it out through the use of color, value and composition. It is not always easy to do, but when it works, it is magic.

I find that I am much more likely to succeed in a painting if I paint from life. A photograph can record detail for finishing the work later, but it can never convey that initial excitement I feel when I choose something that needs to be painted.

Artist's Bio

Although my college background was in Graphic Design, I began painting and making handbuilt pottery when I relocated to Winston-Salem, NC in 1978 and decided to stay at home with my two daughters. I studied with numerous local artists during the late 1970's and early 1980's and became a member of the Winston-Salem Craft Guild, the Carolina Craftsmen and an exhibiting member of the Associated Artists of Winston-Salem. My work has been accepted into numerous juried exhibitions and is held in private collections.

In 1985 I decided to pursue a full-time graphic design career so painting and pottery were put aside. After a thirteen year career, my department was downsized I began to work as a freelance designer and illustrator which freed up some time for painting,. During the early 1980's, I had settled on watercolor as my favorite media, however, inspired by a workshop in the Spring of 2000 with Bob Rohm at Willow Wisp Farm Studios in Asheville, NC, I began to paint on location using pastels. This workshop taught me how to see differently and changed my painting totally. I have returned to Willow Wisp to study with Ralph Oberg, Doug Dawson and most recently a studio figure workshop with Margaret Dyer. Winston-Salem is home to some very fine artists and because of this, I never had to leave town to be able to spend a week studying with Scott Burdick and Susan Lyon in their studios and also to attend a workshop with Steve Childs working from a live model. All of these wonderful artists were so generous with their knowledge and each one of them has contributed greatly to the evolution of my work.

Currently I am a member of the Piedmont Outdoor Painting Society, a group of artists that paints outdoors on location several times a month. We join forces with local historical and preservation societies and organizations such as the Piedmont Land Conservancy so that we may be able to preserve these beautiful places on canvas and paper. We have held group exhibitions at Salem College, The Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, the Theater Art Galleries in High Point, Reynolda Gardens in Winston-Salem and many more.

RESUME

Career Summary
I began painting seriously in 1978. Since that time I have taken many paths, including a 13 year career as a graphic designer which consumed all of my time and left very little energy for painting. For the past six years I have been working as a freelance designer and illustrator and making time for my personal artwork. The focus of my recent work has been plein air painting in oil and pastel and I am currently exhibiting my work in solo and group shows as well as in several galleries.
